New York mayor Michael Bloomberg declared before the United Nations this week that the highest calling of government is to promote healthy foods. Interesting, I thought the constitution said it was life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
According to the mayor, the governments of the world should work together to control people’s food choices and limit cholesterol, sugar and salt intake for the good of all. New York city has made great strides instituting bland menus devoid of joy and beauty. The city believes that it knows what the people should consume, that for every individual it knows best the proper amounts of sugar and salt.
Obviously, there is no authorization or power given in the constitution of the United States for any government to control the diets of it citizens. The bible says that it is appointed once for man to die and then the judgment. Currently, lifespans are greater than ever recorded, but we must do more. People
Obesity is caused by violating God’s word. Gluttony, like drunkenness, is the over consumption of food and is prohibited in scripture. In wealthy countries like America, we consume too much food for a variety of reasons. But we are not to eat beyond the point of satisfaction.
There are also foods the bible calls unclean. While the New Testament seems to free us from these restrictions, it is interesting that pork, shellfish and other unclean foods have higher amounts of cholesterol and other unhealthy substances. We can accept this from doctors but not scripture.
We are also called to be industrious, we are to work. Many are staying on the couch and not going about the business that God has called them.
From eating too much to eating what the Lord has called an abomination to not working, we have not heard the Lord and obeyed. Our collective largess is not from too little government intervention. Government cannot bring health and it has not power to do so.
